Personal, Social Health and Economic Education (P.S.H.E.)

Our Intent, Implementation and Impact statement for PSHE Education

Intent

Our PSHE curriculum equips children with essential skills for life. The planning and resources aim to develop our children holistically, developing the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to protect and enhance their wellbeing. PSHE lessons ensure children learn how to stay safe and healthy, build and maintain successful relationships and become active members of the community, responsibly participating in society around them.

We believe that a successful PSHE curriculum coverage is a vital tool in preparing children for life in society now and in the future.  Lessons in our PSHE curriculum focus on enabling children to see each and everybody’s value in society, from appreciation of others in units such as Diverse Britain and One World, to promoting strong and positive views of self in TEAM and Be Yourself.

Our PSHE units aim to cover a wide range of the social and emotional aspects of learning, enabling children to develop their identity and self-esteem as active, confident members of their community. The themes and topics support social, moral, spiritual and cultural development and provide children with protective teaching on essential safeguarding issues, developing their knowledge of when and how they can ask for help.

Our resources used to teach the PSHE curriculum are fully in line with the Learning Outcomes and Core Themes provided by the PSHE Association Programme of Study which is widely used by schools in England and is recommended and referred to by the DfE in all key documentation relating to PSHE provision in schools.

Implementation

We use ‘Jigsaw’ curriculum resources as an whole-school approach to developing children’s Personal. Spiritual, Moral Socail and Cultural wellbeing, through PSHE and RE programmes. ‘Jigsaw’ is a progressive and spiral scheme of learning. In planning the lessons, Jigsaw PSHE ensures that learning from previous years is revisited and extended, adding new concepts, knowledge and skills, year on year as appropriate. Our curriculum has explicit links to the DfE statutory Relationships and Health Education outcomes.

Lessons also signpost key words, which are our added to our vocabulary bank and DKR sheets. This helps build a rich vocabulary to develop children’s understanding. Our PSHE lessons are designed to be delivered in a creative manner, using many approaches such as role play, discussion and games with groups of various sizes. These activities enable children to build confidence and resilience. We provide parents and carers with DKR sheets, which communicate how and why each theme is covered and also include relevant knowledge and vocabulary from each unit taught.

Assessment for learning opportunities are built into each lesson providing children an opportunity to self evaluate and reflect on their learning. This gives teachers opportunities to evaluate and assess progress. Each lesson begins with a discussion of children’s existing knowledge and experience, providing an opportunity for baseline assessment. Each lesson ends with an opportunity to consolidate and reflect upon learning. Whole school summative assessment sheets allow progress to be recorded and tracked.

Impact

Our PSHE curriculum is an effective curriculum for well-being. Children are enabled to develop the vocabulary and confidence needed to clearly articulate their thoughts and feelings in a climate of openness, trust and respect, and know when and how they can seek the support of others. children will apply their understanding of society to their everyday interactions, from the classroom to the wider community of which they are a part.

Children are provided with the skills to evaluate and understand their own wellbeing needs, practise self-care and contribute positively to the wellbeing of those around them. We believe our curriculum has a positive impact on the whole child, including their academic development and progress, by mitigating any social and emotional barriers to learning and building confidence and self-esteem.

Our PSHE curriculum is a whole-school approach to positively impact wellbeing, safeguarding and SMSC outcomes. This can ensure that all children are able to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to succeed at school and in the wider world.

Do, Know and Remember Sheet (DKRs)

Our units of work are supported by,  ‘Do, Know and Remember’ (DKR) overviews that detail what the children already know, what they will need to know in the new unit of work, key vocabulary, what comes next and how this fits into the world of work to contextualise each individual subject.
